It's Sony's latest offering in an eBook reader and it has some great features that make it attractive and one of the best competitors for the Kindle. Some of the things we really liked about the Sony Reader 700 was the overall attractive look, the touch screen interface and the backlit screen. These are a few of the features we missed on the Kindle 2, so we liked using them on the Sony 700. It comes with a leather case which is really attractive and kept the ebook reader protected. However, after just a few days of carrying it around in my purse the edges started to fray a little. But I really liked that the case was magnetic, so I didn't have to worry about the screen getting scratched or the cover bent when I would put it in my bag. However, it easily snaps in and out of the case when I just wanted the ebook reader. The device itself makes the Kindle 2 look almost laughable. The Kindles, with their plastic cases, can look like a toy, but the Sony looks professional, real and attractive. Because of the touch screen, there aren't a lot of buttons crowding the screen. This gives the 700 an overall clean appearance. This e-reader is easy to navigate, even right out of the box. The power button is on the top along with slots for the memory and SD cards. If you don't like using the touchscreen, it also comes with a stylus that slides in and out on the side. On the bottom you have your headphone jacks, the switch to turn on the light, volume control and the external plug ins for charging and downloading books. The Sony 700 was easy to use when reading. The book menu was easy to access as were tools for highlighting passages, saving quotes and even dog-earing pages so that I could easily find passages I wanted to remember again. The screen was fairly easy to read inside, but I found when I was near a lot of light or in low light situations, I had an easier time reading with the light on. So after a while, I left the light on permanently. It drained the battery a little bit faster than the regular e-ink technology would, but it was almost negligible compared to how often my other electronic devices need to be charged. The one real downside to the Sony 700 is that it isn't wireless. You need to be connected to a base computer to access the eBook Store through Sony. The eBook store has a several hundred thousand books available, it looks and acts a lot like iTunes. Most of the new books were about 12 dollars with some monthly specials for as low one dollar. For the most part, the Sony Reader PRS 700 is an easy-to-use device that makes electronic reading a pleasant experience.
