Is it a defensive move? Or has the DX done so well Amazon is ready to abandon the smaller screen? Today on their website Amazon started listing the Kindle 2 (the one with the now-annoyingly small screen) for less than $300. Are they trying to get rid of stock? Who cares about their motives? It’s a good move all around.
Shaving off $60, Amazon took the Kindle 2 from $350 to the magical sub-$300 range. It could be enough to spark a revolution on the Kindle device. With more and more eBook reading devices hitting the market, and some of them actually pretty good competition to the Kindle, Amazon couldn’t afford to sit back and rest on the laurels with the success they’ve had to far with the device. Sure it’s only $60, but the mental change that will go through customers could be substantial (“Well, the Kindle used to be so expensive, but now that it’s less than $300, I think I might get it”).
We loved the COOL-ER eBook readers because they were so cheap, but now that Kindle has dropped its price and has the same first number, suddenly we think the Kindle sounds a lot cheaper. Will it entice you to get one?
